The burly, bearded man stepped forward and shook my hand. He was all smiles until Serenity walked around me and he saw her.

With a deep frown, Timothy exclaimed, “Sheriff Adams? You’re one of the last people I expected to see during our visit in Possum Gap.”

I caught Serenity’s eyes widen before she fully faced the man. “I’m sorry. Have we met?”

Timothy chuckled and glanced at his wife, whose cheeks were either pink from the cold or embarrassment. “Luckily for us, no. But we’ve certainly seen you around the settlement in Blood Rock. We moved to the community close to six months ago.” He blew out a steady breath and nodded. “You’ve done good work for us during difficult times.”

“I’m investing the disappearance of Albert Peachy. He was in Blood Rock a few days ago and now, he’s missing,” Serenity said in a relaxed manner.

The tallest man, who I guessed was pushing forty smirked as he stared at Serenity. She frowned back at him as the cold wind blew and the snowflakes multiplied. The boy leaned back against the railing with a bored expression, while the girl stood up tall and straight, her eyes darting between everyone.

“That is sad business, Sheriff, but you know how our young ins are. They sometimes stretch their wings at a young age,” the wife—Grace—said. She walked past Serenity without waiting for a response and into the house. “We’re in a hurry to be on our way and must retrieve our belongings.”

Before her husband could join her, Serenity stepped in front of him, blocking his path. “Bishop Esch said he spoke to you and your wife.”

Timothy nodded. “He did, and we had no revelations about Albert’s whereabouts. Ezra took him to the bus station that morning and returned an hour later without him.”

“Albert wanted to go home?” Serenity pressed.

“That’s where he said he was going and we felt relief, never dreaming that he wouldn’t make it back here.”

“Did he seem off to you in any way?” Serenity paused, then added, “Maybe upset about something?”

“No. He was his usually jolly self.” He pursed his lips, looking past Serenity. His eyes were on the window as he watched Grace and Tina gathering their suitcases. “Although, I will tell you, he was dressed as an Englisher. I asked him if he intended to go English, and he told me he was thinking about it. I let the conversation go. It’s our way to allow young people to decide that for themselves.”

Serenity snorted loudly. “I don’t think your bishop agrees with that sentiment.”

The corner of Timothy’s mouth curled. “We don’t all have such strict beliefs. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I will help the women.”

Serenity sighed and stepped sideways. Timothy motioned for the children to go with him, and the boy raced ahead. The girl—I believe Lucinda said her name was Mira—paused to look at me. Her large eyes and freckles smattering her cheeks gave her a memorable face. Her deep frown prompted me to stop her before she crossed the threshold.
